The Tools of Transloading Dry Bulk Cargo

Loading and unloading bulk material presents a unique challenge for the shipping industry. When ships are idling in port or trucks are waiting to load up, time is money. Efficiency and reliability of transloaders is essential to keep the wheels of freight moving. Here are some of the most difficult challenges of moving these temperamental materials and Cambelt's solutions.

Challenges of Handling Dry Bulk Cargo

Handling loose cargo like grains, ores, or wood chips is significantly different from handling liquids or packaged goods. Each dry bulk material presents its own unique challenge as well. Each of these materials has its own properties that affect how it moves, its susceptibility to contamination or degradation, and tendency to corrode vessels or fly away. All this can be immensely challenging for transloading equipment.

Over the course of a year, any particular cargo terminal or freight yard may handle a wide variety of materials on their way from one place to another. This means equipment needs to be adaptable to different scenarios and easy to clean between uses.

Additionally, because most transfer sites are created for the convenience of converging transports, transloading dry bulk cargo often takes place in the open with little protection from weather or other conditions.

Innovative Solutions for Unloading and Transloading

Specialized belt conveyors are most often the tools of choice for the job. And Cambelt builds the most versatile conveyors on the market in a variety of configurations. We provide conveyor systems for every step of the way along the path for dry bulk cargo.

At the Cargo Port

A large cargo ship may have several points of unloading freight at once. The bulk cargo terminal needs to be extensive enough to handle a high volume over a short time. Cambelt's CamSpan Gallery is ideal for this situation. It's a free-spanning elevated conveyor system with an enclosed walkway. The dust-tight enclosure is necessary where conditions are often problematic for loose cargo handling. The conveyor is equipped with a trough belt for high speed and high volume transporting and can interface with the ship's own conveyor systems at multiple points. If multiple products or simultaneous loading and unloading are required, the CamSpan Gallery can be configured with dual conveyors.

At the Freight Yard

Logistically, loading and unloading hopper cars and semi trailers at a freight yard can be a complex process. A car may be unloaded just in time to be loaded again with something else. Cambelt's mobile transloaders fit snugly under the discharge port of a hopper car and convey cargo at a 60 angle directly into a trailer or another rail car. They can easily maneuver between lines and from rail car to semi trailer rather than pushing the rail cars around the yard. We offer towable as well as electric and diesel powered self propelled units. Optional retractable discharge spouts are also available for these mobile unloaders.

At the Storage Facility

Cambelt builds many fixed incline belt conveyors as well. Whether unloading a freight vehicle or reloading from a silo or dome, we can custom build a dry bulk cargo handling system ideal for any operation. Stationary rail car unloaders can be fitted with boot lifts for dust-tight fit-up to rail car hoppers. We can build high incline conveyors to fill the tallest storage facilities. We also offer some of the best known dome reclaimer systems in the world.

Cambelt's conveyor systems can handle dry bulk solids with vastly different angles of repose and other properties along any incline. We build belt conveyors that can withstand inclement weather and move to wherever they're needed. Contact us to begin building your bulk cargo conveyor system.
